A computational education scheme for primary students funded and created by Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has obtained international certification and three international awards that are regarded in the sector as the equivalent of the “Oscars.”
CoolThink@JC, launched in 2016, is a three-year curriculum for upper primary students, aimed at inspiring digital creativity and nurturing the proactive use of technologies among pupils.
It offers 14 hours of computational thinking learning classes per school year at 131 schools and has supported 674 teachers, and aims to benefit around 100,000 upper primary school students by the end of 2024.
The program yesterday announced it recently won two awards in the QS Reimagine Education Awards, seen as the sector’s “Oscars.”
That saw it beat off 1,350 applications from 84 regions in a race for recognition of its innovative teaching programs, and won it a silver award in the engineering and IT category and a bronze in presence learning and teaching.
Apart from the QS awards, the program also received international certification by the International Society for Technology in Education, as well as high scores in Education Alliance Finland certification, which specializes in quality verification of educational solutions and services.
The news came as China Mobile Hong Kong announced its launch of a “AiTLE x CMHK I.T. Lab Design Program” in support of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in schools.
The telecommunications giant said it is working with the Association of IT Leaders in Education to offer free “IT Lab” design solutions for local schools, covering 5G, intelligent software and hardware supports, allowing students to explore their potential in STEM learning and innovation in a superior learning environment.
The program will tailor an IT lab for 20 schools for them to allow them to conduct different STEM teaching initiatives and innovative activities.
The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education and Innoduction Group will provide designs for the IT labs, the STEM education software, professional consultancy, etc, while the association will provide tailored education advice for schools based on their needs.
China Mobile Hong Kong will support the schools by using its strength in 5G and virtual reality technologies.
